The Salty Moose
Austin Keaton is a Florida native, and grew up in the tourist town of Orlando. He loves not only inshore light tackle and bass fishing, but also fly fishing. It wasn’t until he spent a summer vacation in Kalispell, Montana that he was exposed to one of the most exciting, beautiful forms of fishing, fly fishing! His Grandpa George, who was an obsessed fly fisherman, took 12-year old Austin on a four-day backpacking trip into Montana’s beautiful Jewel Basin, where they camped next to a stream that flowed into a clear mountain lake. Austin was immediately captivated by all of the beauty Montana had to offer, but when he saw his grandfather swinging a large stick around, a long line trailing behind it – a fly rod – he got truly mesmerized by what he was seeing.
When Austin’s vacation ended and he came back to Florida, the first thing he did was tell his mom that he was going to save up and buy his own fly rod. He did just that, and bought himself an 8wt Redington Fly 2. He quickly realized fly fishing was something almost unheard of Florida because he would hear people say, “Wow look at that kid over there fly fishing! It’s so beautiful, but I wonder why he is doing that here?”
